Md. Yeasin Pathan

Md. Yeasin Pathan a retired school peon is fighting all odds for more than four decades, indifference and intolerance to preserve and restore 34 Hindu medieval temples by the placid waters of river Kangsabati in West Bengal's Pathra (Midnapore).

The history of Pathra goes back to the Gupta period when the place was the vicinity of Tamralipta port, a gateway to Southeast Asia. From the 8th Century to the 12th Century, it was an important hub for Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. A majestic Vishnu Lokeshwar statue was dug out in the village in October 1961. It exposed both Hindu and Buddhist influences, indicating that practitioners of both religions frequented Pathra.

Many of the existing temples however have been left behind by 18th century zamindars of Pathra.

The 67-year-old (DOB 4th March 1952) Md. Yeasin Pathan is a resident of Hatihalka village in West Midnapur district and started his journey to save these temples in 1976. In his childhood Yeasin spent hours wandering in the temples and the zamindar's abandoned lands.

The villagers stole the bricks that made up the temples to build their own houses. Even the descendants of the zamindar's family had no worries about lifting these bricks. A century's neglect, local theft and the unpredictable Kangsabati River had taken a toll on the buildings. The temples lay deserted and served as a shelter for anti-social elements. Nobody was interested in listening to Yeasin’s idea of conservation.

পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুর জেলার চুয়াডাঙ্গা উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ের প্রাক্তন শিক্ষাকর্মী মহম্মদ ইয়াসিন পাঠান উদার মানবধর্মের প্রতীক। তিনি আমাদের গর্ব। দারিদ্রের কারণে প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক শিক্ষা খুব বেশি এগোয়নি। স্বশিক্ষিত ইয়াসিন জাতি-ধর্ম আর দারিদ্যের রক্তচক্ষু উপেক্ষা করে ভালোবেসেছেন “মন্দিরময় পাথরা”র ধবংসপ্রায় পুরাকীর্তিগুলিকে। এগিয়ে এসেছেন সংরক্ষণে । অতিক্রম করতে হয়েছে বহু চড়াই-উতরাই। সময়ের সঙ্গে ইয়াসিন-কে ঘিরে একটা প্রত্যাশা তৈরী হয়ে গিয়েছিল এলাকার মানুষের মনে। মুসলিম যুবক ইয়াসিনের নেতৃত্বে “পাথরা পুরাতত্ব সংরক্ষণ কমিটি” প্রতিষ্ঠা হলো। কমিটির তত্বাবধানে এগিয়ে চলল মন্দির রক্ষার কাজ। বিভিন্ন সময়ে পাশে থেকে এগিয়ে যেতে উৎসাহ দিয়েছেন বিশিষ্ট পুরাতত্ববিদ তারাপদ সাঁতরা সহ সমাজের বিভিন্ন ব্যাক্তিত্ত। আজ ইয়াসিন নিজেই একটি প্রতিষ্ঠান। মাননীয় রাষ্ট্রপতি “কবীর” সম্মান দিয়ে কাজের স্বীকৃতি জানিয়েছেন। একটি প্রতিষ্ঠান দিয়েছেন সাম্মানিক “ডক্টরেট”। ভারত সরকারের পুরাতত্ব বিভাগ মন্দির সংরক্ষণের কাজে ও রাজ্য সরকার “মন্দিরময় পাথরা”-কে পর্যটন কেন্দ্র হিসেবে গড়ে তোলার কাজে এগিয়ে এসেছেন। ভারতের যোজনা কমিশন “মন্দিরময় পাথরা”-কে দিয়েছেন টাকা। কিন্তু ইয়াসিন ভালো নেই। বড় অভিমানে উচ্চারণ করেন- “আমার কথা তেমন করে কেউ ভাবেন না। জানি না নিদারুণ দারিদ্রের সঙ্গে লড়াই করে আর কতদিন নিজেকে বাঁচিয়ে রাখতে পারব।” ব্যতিক্রমী এই মানুষটি ঘিরে আমাদের অনেক গর্ব, অনেক প্রত্যাশা ।

শৈশব থেকে বেড়ে ওঠা :-

নিম্ন মধ্যবিত্ত ক্ষেতমজুর পরিবারে জন্ম। সাত ভাই ও তিন বোনের মধ্যে ইয়াসিন বড়। অভাব-অনটনের কারণে পড়াশোনার সঙ্গে ক্ষেতের কাজে যুক্ত হতে হয়েছেন ছোটবেলা থেকে। অষ্টম শ্রেণিতে পাশ করার পর নবম শ্রেণিতে উত্তীর্ণ হয়ে তিন মাস ক্লাস করার পর পড়াশোনা ছেড়ে দিয়ে জন-মজুর হিসেবে ক্ষেতের কাজে যুক্ত হয়ে পড়েছিলেন। অসুস্থ মা-বাবা এবং ছোট ছোট ভাই-বোনেদের অন্ন যোগানোর দায় তাঁকে ছোটবেলা থেকেই বহন করতে হয়েছে। কবিতা লেখার ঝোঁক ছিল। অমানুষিক পরিশ্রম হলেও লেখা বন্ধ করেননি। বেড়ে ওঠার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে মেদিনীপুরের বিভিন্ন পত্র-পত্রিকায় লিখতে থাকেন। বাংলা সন ১৩৮১-তে ইয়াসিন তাঁর দুই বন্ধুকে (আব্দুল সাত্তার খাঁন ও বাদলকিশোর ভূইএ্যা) নিয়ে নিজের গ্রাম থেকে “গ্রামবার্তা” নামে একটি পত্রিকা প্রকাশ করেন। পাশাপাশি ১৯৭৩ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ থেকে মেদিনীপুর শহরের “মেদিনীপুর বার্তা” পত্রিকায় নিয়মিত প্রবন্ধ, গ্রাম-বাংলা বিষয়ক প্রবন্ধ লিখতে থাকেন। স্থানীয় হাইস্কুলে পিয়নের চাকুরী পাওয়ার পর সাহিত্য-চর্চায় নিজেকে আরো বেশি নিয়োজিত করেন।

1991 – During the month of October Md. Yeasin Pathan formed “Pathra Archaeological Preservation Committee” to preserve and protect temples of Pathra.

1992, 5th December - Md. Yeasin Pathan was successful to bring District Magistrate and journalists to Pathra. He explained the heritage value of Pathra.

1993, 3rd March – His research on Pathra was published as a book named “Mandirmoy Pathrar Itibritto”. Inaugurated by Sri Binay Krishna Choudhury.

1994, 13th August - Received National Award “KABIR PURASKAR” For Communal Harmony by Honourable President of India. He is the only person from West Bengal received this award.

1999, Published English documentary “ROMANCING THE STONE”.

2001, Film Division of Government of India made a Bengali documentary “Kandari” based on the life of Md. Yeasin Pathan.

2003, 27th November – 2nd edition of “Mandirmoy Pathrar Itibritto” was inaugurated by honourable chief minister Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

2003, 16th July – Archaeological Survey of India took 28 out of 34 temples under their supervision.

2007 – Published another book “ARCHAEOLOGICAL LIST & MAP of DISTRICT PASCHIM MEDINIPUR”.

2009 - Awarded “24 Ghanta `Ananya Samman` for Bengal`s extraordinaire” by Zee News.

2010 – Awarded “CID Gallantry Award” by Sony Entertainment Television.

2011 – Awarded “Salam Bengal Award” by Anandalok Magazine (ABP Group).

2015 – Awarded “Ami Amar Moto Samman” by Ebela (ABP Group).

2016 – Awarded “Star of Bengal Award” by Prabhat Khabar.
